To hear Clifford Brown two years after you start playing the trumpet in Montana was pretty eye opening . . . to say the least!

In those days, the only people listed on the album were the rhythm section guys. For a year or more (after recording the flugelhorn solo on Paul McCartney’s Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey), I was the most famous unknown trumpet player in the world.

When Tony Bennett and I (John Bunch) heard you warming up, we thought we had made the biggest mistake of our lives!

I saw the Tijuana Brass TV specials and thought the trombone player was really cool. He was in the background and then he would jump out and play a solo. I thought that would fit my personality.

The head went by in about 4 seconds, they pushed me up to the microphone and the rhythm section stopped!
